When trying to define their ‘success’, it’s hard to pin it down to just one thing. For Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, aka Detroit Swindle, perhaps it’s their talent to find that typical groove that has been so widely acclaimed. Or maybe it’s their ability to connect musical styles spanning over more than 5 decades (and continents) into their sets and productions in such a way that you’re always curious to hear what comes next. Or could it be because they’re always on the move, searching for that new thing to challenge themselves in their productions and live sets. Whatever it is, it’s keeping them rather busy.
Not surprisingly, staying busy is exactly what they’re doing with their label, Heist Recordings. Maarten and Lars are constantly on the look out for new music and that one promising artist that they feel needs to be heard. Though Heist saw it’s very first EP only back in 2013, it already has become the go-to label for many A-list dj’s. It has released a wide variety of exciting EP’s by a.o. Fouk, Max Graef, Brame & Hamo, M.ono, Frits Wentink, M.ono, Andy Hart and of course Detroit Swindle themselves. They’re working hard to give Heist that unique edge with the artists they work with, the artwork they put forward and the special projects they have on the label such as the yearly Roundup EP, a tradition where every artist of that year remixes another artist, effectuated by the luck of the draw.
John Barera has been a firm disciple of the Techno and House world for the past 10 years, and after co-founding Supply Records in 2011 & Jack Dept in 2014 has brought an elegant, resoundingly universal mixture of underground club tracks to the fore.
As a DJ John always puts in a little extra work to keep the dance floor engaged and the party special. Always collecting and listening to records of all kinds, his sets have been known to go over well. Groove Magazine, Resident Advisor, Fact Mag, XLR8R and Little White Earbuds have all spoken well of his work and he has been invited to play alongside artists such as Stacey Pullen, Optimo, Juan Atkins, Floating Points, Jimmy Edgar, Daniel Bell, Andrés, Martyn, Faltydl, and Bicep. John is currently holding down a residency at Boston's long-running Make it New party and at Bossa Nova Civic Club in Brooklyn.
Tom Noble is a heavy record collector, DJ & Producer extraordinaire. His only concern as a DJ is sharing interesting tunes people may not know, and playing them in a sequence to make them dance....and never leave the floor. Releasing music on PPU, Stones Throw, Clone, Beats In Space & Superior Elevation. Tom has built a reputation as someone who knows his way around a serious dance floor banger. His dedication to authenticity in his musical productions is so convincing that sometimes people don't even know his music is modern. As Tim Sweeney once said "Tom Noble is a disco genius."
Tom's sound, the nucleus being disco & boogie, tends to extend to paradise garage 80's jams as well as classic & modern house as well as any music which as he describes "is bright enough to light up the room by itself". His roots of jamaican and soul will definitely come out at some point in the night, and while he believes mixing is the glue that solidifies a night, selection is most important thing.
